About Us

Beginning in 1988, the Columbia Aeronautics and Space Association was created by Pat Daugherty as a club at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Missouri. While the first mission only included 15 students (four of them living in a mock lunar habitat), it grew to be extremely popular at the school and only stayed a club until 1991 when it was moved to Hickman High School in the same city to become a class and club. During the school day, students, under the leadership of Jim Kyd, could simulate the problems occurring in NASA and engineer creations of their own design. These students worked with the materials they had, having to work out of a building that used to be the school's auto shop. The club and class numbers eventually grew to hold 150 students. The program has persisted since then and is now under the direction and leadership of Matt Leuchtmann.
